Osteopathy

Osteopathy was founded in the late 19th century by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in the United States. Osteopathy operates on the principle that the body’s structure and function are interrelated, and that manipulation of the musculoskeletal system can facilitate the body’s ability to heal itself. Osteopathic manipulative medicine involves techniques such as joint mobilisation and manipulation, muscle energy techniques, myofascial release, dry needling, stretching, gentle pressure, and resistance to alleviate pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall health.

At Movement Matters Osteopathy Mermaid Waters we treat a variety of conditions, including back pain, neck pain, headaches, arthritis, and sports injuries. We focus not only on alleviating symptoms but also on addressing underlying imbalances in the body.

Exercise Therapy

At Movement Matters Osteopathy Mermaid Waters, we’re passionate about the health benefits of exercise therapy  and strength training. These exercises help improve bone density, making our bones stronger and more resilient. They also assist in preventing injuries by stabilising our joints and correcting any imbalances in our muscles. One of the most noticeable benefits is improved functional capacity, making everyday tasks easier and promoting independence. Additionally, strength training can aid in weight management by boosting metabolism and preserving lean muscle mass. It also contributes to better posture and balance, reducing the risk of falls, especially among older adults.

As we age, maintaining strength becomes increasingly important, as it helps counteract muscle loss and maintain bone density, supporting healthy aging. At Movement Matters Osteopathy Mermaid Waters, we integrate strength training into our holistic approach to wellness, offering personalised programs to optimise musculoskeletal health and overall well-being.

Cardiovascular Health

Engaging in cardiovascular exercise like running, swimming, cycling, or brisk walking brings numerous health benefits beyond physical fitness. These activities strengthen the heart, lowering resting heart rate and reducing heart disease risk. They also improve circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to cells more efficiently.

Aerobic exercise aids weight management by burning calories and aiding fat loss alongside a balanced diet. It enhances lung capacity, improving endurance for physical activities. Additionally, it boosts mental health by releasing endorphins, alleviating stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms. At Movement Matters Osteopathy Mermaid waters we educate our patients on the health benefits of incorporating cardiovascular exercise into their daily routines promotes longevity, reduces chronic disease risks, and fosters well-being. By enhancing heart health, circulation, weight management, mental health, sleep quality, energy levels, and cognitive function, it contributes to overall vitality and quality of life.

Performance Coaching

Osteopathy offers a range of benefits that can significantly enhance sports performance. One key advantage is its ability to prevent injuries by addressing imbalances and dysfunctions within the body, thus enabling athletes to train consistently and perform at their best without the hindrance of potential injuries. Osteopathic techniques such as joint mobilisation and manipulation can improve flexibility and range of motion, leading to better movement efficiency and technique, while simultaneously reducing the risk of injury.

By addressing biomechanical imbalances and inefficiencies, osteopathy helps athletes achieve more efficient movement patterns, thus optimising their performance and decreasing the likelihood of overuse injuries. Engaging in osteopathic treatment can lead to stress reduction, both physically and mentally, which in turn promotes relaxation, improves sleep quality, and enhances overall well-being thereby maximising their potential for success on the field or in competition.

"The choices that we make today will determine the life we live tomorrow".

Mermaid Waters Osteopathy FAQs

What is an osteopath
Osteopathy is a manual medicine that uses a hands-on approach to the treatment of structural and functional injuries of the human body. Osteopaths can also prescribe exercises for injury rehabilitation or performance, general nutritional advice and lifestyle coaching.

Osteopathic health care focuses on treatment of the mental, emotional and physical body including the joints, muscles, internal organs, nerves, circulation and connective tissue with ‘hands on’ techniques, such as muscle energy techniques, stretching and myofascial release techniques for general treatment of the soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) along with the mobilisation, joint articulation and manipulation of joint and tissue restrictions.
