Muscle Strain or Sprain
This is one of the most common causes of neck pain. It can occur from poor posture, overuse of neck muscles, sleeping in an awkward position, or sudden movements that strain the neck muscles.
Poor Posture
Maintaining poor posture for extended periods, such as slouching while sitting at a desk or hunching over a smartphone, can put strain on the neck muscles and lead to pain.
Neck Injuries
Accidents or trauma, such as whiplash from a car accident, a fall, or sports injuries, can result in neck pain.
Herniated Cervical Disc
This occurs when the soft inner core of a cervical disc protrudes through the tough outer layer and presses on nearby nerves, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness in the neck and arms.
Degenerative Conditions
Conditions such as osteoarthritis, cervical spondylosis, or degenerative disc disease can cause gradual deterioration of the cervical spine, leading to neck pain and stiffness.
Muscle Tension and Stress
Emotional stress or tension can cause muscles in the neck and shoulders to tighten, leading to pain and discomfort.
Infections and Inflammatory Conditions
Conditions such as osteoarthritis, cervical spondylosis, or degenerative disc disease can cause gradual deterioration of the cervical spine, leading to neck pain and stiffness.
Tumors
Although less common, tumors or abnormal growths in the cervical spine or surrounding tissues can lead to neck pain, especially if they put pressure on nerves or the spinal cord.
